Traditional shepherd’s pie is made with ground beef, this recipe with ground turkey gives this notoriously heavy dish a lighter feel!
So I lightened up the traditional recipe just a tad by using ground turkey instead of ground beef or even ground lamb. This helps to lower the fat content of the dish if that is something you were looking for! To be honest, you won’t miss the ground beef because this dish is full of so many other flavors!

What Ingredients are Needed for Shepherd’s Pie with Ground Turkey?
Potatoes: Large russet baking potatoes.
Peas, Carrots, and Corn: Buy frozen if you can! Canned works as well.
Onion: One half of a medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped small.
Garlic: Two cloves of garlic, minced.
Olive Oil
Paprika: Don’t be shy on the paprika, it really adds a ton of delicious flavor to this dish.
Dried Parsley
Ground Pepper
Worcestershire Sauce: Really makes the ground turkey flavorful.
Butter: Unsalted butter brought to room temperature. The key is to let the butter sit out while you’re prepping and cooking the rest of the meal so when you go to whip it with the potatoes it’s nice and soft.
Milk: You can truly use any milk you prefer. I never have dairy milk on hand, so I used almond milk. Coconut milk, oat milk, 1%, 2%, whole milk are all good options.

How to Make Shepherd’s Pie with Ground Turkey
Prep: Preheat the oven to 375𝆩 F.
Wash and pierce potatoes with a fork. Place in the microwave and cook for 5-7 minutes*.
Cook the Filling: In a deep pan over medium-high heat, add the olive oil, onions, and garlic. Saute until tender and fragrant.
Add the ground turkey, paprika, parsley, pepper, and worcestershire sauce. Saute, stirring frequently, until the meat has browned. Remove from heat.
Stir the frozen peas and corn into the pot.
Prepare the Potatoes: In a large bowl with a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer, scoop the potato insides into the bowl (removing the skins). Beat together with butter and milk until creamy.
Assemble and Bake: In a pie pan, layer the turkey and veggie mixture across the bottom. Top with whipped potatoes.
Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. You will know it's done when the potato topping is slightly browned.
Enjoy served warm!
