Happy almost Valentine’s Day! These heart shaped sugar cookies are the perfect treat to make for your loved ones OR make with your loved ones since they are so fun to decorate.
What other time of year do you make cut out cookies? For me it’s usually just Christmas time, cutting out gingerbread men, snowmen, or Christmas trees with my classic holiday-themed cookie cutters. This year, I’m busting out the cookie cutters for Valentine’s Day too!
Usually I’m not the biggest fan of sugar cookies, but I just couldn’t resist whipping up a cute V-day themed dessert. To mask the blandness of sugar cookies, because yes, I think they’re bland, we’re topping them off with some icing and tons of sprinkles! Now that’s a cookie I can get behind.
Decorate to your HEART'S desire! See what I did there? These cookies would make a sweet gift for your loved ones, co-workers, or friends. If you’ve got little ones in the house, this is such a fun cookie to make with them. They’ll have so much fun rolling out the dough and cutting out the hearts. You can get a variety of icing colors and sprinkles to let them really get creative.
For this recipe, I chose a classic white icing with red, pink, and white sprinkle dots.
Ingredients in these Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies
Dry Ingredients: A combination of all purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Classic and simple staples.
Wet Ingredients: Unsalted and room temperature butter, granulated white sugar, 1 egg, and vanilla. Again, classic and simple staple ingredients for a sugar cookie. We’re not getting fancy here.
Toppings: Choose your own, but I recommend a store-bought white icing with red and pink sprinkles.

How to Make these Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies
Step One: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together 2 ½ cups of all purpose flour, ½ teaspoon of baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon of salt.
Step Two: In a large bowl, beat ¾ cup of butter on medium-high speed with your electric hand mixer (or use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment). Beat in ¾ cup of granulated white sugar until creamed together, approx. 2-3 minutes. Beat in 1 egg and 2 teaspoons of vanilla until combined.
Step Three: Mix in ⅓ of the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients on low speed until fully combined, repeat for the other ⅔ of the dough until fully combined (⅓ of dry ingredients at a time).
Step Four: On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a ball. Place the rolled out dough in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Step Five: Once chilled, preheat the oven to 350° F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step Six: Place the chilled dough on a flat, lightly floured surface and roll out into ¼ inch thickness, using your heart shaped cookie cutter, cut into heart shapes. Roll any discarded/remaining dough and continue cutting into heart shapes until all the dough is used.
Step Seven: Place cut hearts onto the baking tray and bake for 12-13 minutes, rotating halfway through, until cookies are very lightly browned on the edges.
Step Eight: Remove cookies from the oven and transfer to a wire cooling rack. Let cookies cool completely before decorating. Once cookies have cooled, top with icing and sprinkles. Decorate to your HEART’s desire!
