A simple and easy baklava recipe made with only a handful of ingredients and pre-made phyllo dough.

Baklava is a Greek dessert pastry consisting of flaky phyllo dough layers, a simple chopped nut mixture, and a sweet honey syrup that makes this dish a trio of amazing textures and flavors. I’ve always wanted to test my own Baklava recipe, but put it off for years because it seemed like a daunting undertaking. I’m happy to report that my Easy Baklava Recipe is just that!

What makes this recipe easier than most is the layering technique. Instead of doing individual single-layers of phyllo dough, which are super thin and hard to work with, we are doing stacks of phyllo dough. Don’t worry, flavor and texture are not compromised with this method! The stacks make it way easier to work with and are a huge time-saver. Also, we are using two full sticks of butter, so trust me, all the phyllo dough layers will be coated in butter.

What Ingredients are Needed for an Easy Baklava Recipe?

Nuts: I used walnuts (of course lol) and pistachios but you can use mostly any nut here as long as you chop it up very fine in the food processor. (Walnuts, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts, and almonds are the best options).

Cinnamon: Adds some flavor to our nut mixture.

Phyllo Dough: Let’s save ourselves from misery and use frozen, store-bought phyllo dough!

Butter: Lots and lots of unsalted butter.

Honey: To drizzle on after baking, helps all the layers really hold together!

Vanilla Extract: Also part of the drizzle.

    Salt

How to Make an Easy Baklava Recipe

Prep: Preheat the oven to 350° F.

Add the walnuts and pistachios to a food processor and pulse until chopped into fine pieces. Add the cinnamon and salt and pulse until combined.

In a small pot over medium heat, add the 2 sticks of butter. Once the butter is fully melted, let it turn to a light brown color and produce a toasty aroma, approx. 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Separate the phyllo dough into 3 even stacks (approx. 12 sheets per stack).

Assemble: Place one stack of phyllo dough into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking pan. Distribute a third of the butter evenly across the stack. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture over the butter. Layer with the second phyllo dough stack, another third of the butter, and the remaining nuts. Add the final stack of phyllo dough to the top and pour the remaining butter over top.

Cut the baklava lengthwise into 1 ½ inch strips. Then cut into squares approx.1 inches apart. It is important to cut before baking because the phyllo dough will become flaky once baked and impossible to cut without destroying the baklava.

Cook: Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes, until a deep golden color.

When the baklava has about 10 minutes left in the oven, start making the syrup drizzle. Combine the honey, vanilla extract, and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and let simmer for 5 minutes*.

Pour syrup over the baklava when you take it out of the oven. Let soak for at least 2 hours or overnight.
